Today I’m re-working a song called «The Retriever». I will post it under «Songs» any time soon.

This song was written about 15 years ago, the first year I was back in my home town, Aalesund after spending several years in Halden and Oslo as a music student, so young, happy and full of dreams. The song is close to my heart; it tells a story about emotional resignation, facing the fact – or fear – that maybe we have no control over our destiny after all but still we keep doing all these things to control it, unconciousnessly.

So it’s kind of a dreamy story about a person walking through a sphere seeing themselves from the outside, detached from hope, dreams, fear, everything, trying to understand the experiences as a whole picture without feeling it. Which is actually impossible in the real life. Emotions have a tendency to mess up, making us do stupid things, and keep us locked up in places where we’re not able to move and grow. And then, as a paradox, nothing can make us move or grow more. It’s a matter of the angle you look from. And without these silliness and regrets we would not be able to feel hopeless enough to make art and stuff….

Anyway, «The retriever» may be a person hoping to find a message, a clue, something to appear in a wonderful magical way somewhere to gather the pieces, solve the puzzle. And they keep looking, hoping, wanting to believe that the Universe will be helpful. Because they would really like to understand. Is all this hurt good for something? Will it lead to a meaning?

I have taken one step further, as I now record piano and vocals separately, which makes it easier to edit and also the sound quality is better. I kept the lyrics as it was, but added a little bit to it. I also made two versions of the melody line.
